Welding Technology

The Welding Technology program provides you with training in oxy-acetylene welding, brazing, cutting, AC/DC shielded metal arc welding, gouging, semi-automatic gas metal arc welding, flux core welding and tungsten inert gas welding. Starting with planning and layout work, you’ll progresses to setting up and operating braze welding and cutting equipment. Oxy-acetylene welding light gauge metals in all positions and shielded metal arc welding in all positions is also covered. Emphasis is placed on safety as well as blueprint reading, properties of metal, metal identification, types and use of electrodes, welding rods, electrical principles, and welding symbols. The use of manuals, specification charts, and understanding the welding standards established by the American Welding Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers are also stressed. Training will be offered in the planning, layout, forming, joining, and fabrication of various shapes in light and heavy gauge metal and pipe. Students will be exposed to the use of specialized hand tools, shears, forming and shaping machines, drill presses, and metal cutting saws. Inspection and testing processes and procedures are also demonstrated and explained.

Nature of the Program:  Welders may work alone or as part of a team of welders in a factory, building a bridge, or performing work on large objects.  Welders in construction firms normally work outside and may be required to work on scaffolds or platforms. They normally work a 40-hour week on any one of three shifts with overtime sometimes required.

Completion of the Program:  Upon completion of the welding technology program, students should have the qualifications to secure employment with a company that fabricates or installs just about anything that is made of metal. A few examples would be cars, mobile homes, heavy equipment, large buildings, trailers, and pipelines. A person trained in welding has a skill that is in demand in a great number of different businesses and companies. Changes in employment for women provide job opportunities and equal pay and employers are actively seeking qualified women for these types of positions.  AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Certification is also available to students.

Related Occupations: Millwrights, sheet metal workers, boilermakers, metal sculptors, welding technicians, combination welder, welding instructor, welding analyst, welder fitter, welding operator, welding inspector, welding engineer, welding sales, structural steel worker, specialized welder, or foreman.
